The Blackwater security firm will not face prosecution over illegal arms trafficking after it agreed to pay a $7.5 million fine. The firm, who drew a great deal of criticism over their actions in Iraq and have also played a significant role in Afghanistan, were facing 17 different violations including both the posession of unregistered automatic weapons and the sale of anauthorised equipment and training in war torn countries such as Sudan.
With American prosecutors pursuing British banking institutions with such zeal and threatening massive fines as well as the removal of licenses for things like unauthorised foreign transactions it seems strange to me that such an infamous American company should be let off with what amounts to a small fine compared to the firm’s revenue and profits, for so many serious violations of the law.
