The British military has issued in troops in Afghanistan with tiny hand-held surveillance drones.
The tiny remote control helicopters, which are small enough to be held in the palm of your hand, are fitted by video surveillance technology to relay intelligence to a remote terminal. According to Sgt. Christopher Petherbridge from the Brigade Reconnaissance Force, British soldiers will use the drones to “look for insurgent firing points and check out exposed areas of the ground before crossing.”
The ‘Black Hornet Nano’ drones were developed by the Norwegian Prox Dynamics AS company, who secured a £20 million ($30 million) contract for 160 units.
Each drone is just four inches long and weights 16 grams.
