Oscar Pistorius, the South African Paralympic athlete known around the world as the ‘blade runner’, has been arrested over the fatal shooting of his girlfriend at his home in Pretoria, according to local media.
According to an initial police statement a 30 year old woman received fatal wounds to her head and upper body early on Thursday morning at the Silverlakes complex in the Bosckop district where Pretorius lives. As further detail leaked out over the course of the morning it emerged that the women was Reeva Steenkamp, an upcoming fashion model and the girlfriend of Pistorius.
Local media in South Africa initially reported rumours suggesting that Pistorius may have mistaken his girlfriend for a buglary -levels of robbery and violent crime are notoriously high in South Africa. Police statements have suggesting that this is not the case however, and Pistorius has been charged and denied bail due to a previous incident of domestic violence.
Pistorius has been charged and is expected to make a court appearance later on Thursday.
