Four Ex-Ministers Arrested for Plotting Coup in Malawi VPN

imagesPolice in Malawi have arrested four ex-cabinet minister on suspicion of plotting a coup against the government, following the death of President Bingu wa Mutharika last year.

The four men, including Mutharika’s brother, were arrested on Monday after an official inquiry found that they had tried to prevent then vice-President Joyce Banda from taking power. The inquiry also showed that Peter Mutharika, the late President’s younger brother and foreign minister at the time, conspired with former finance minister Goodall Gondwe in an attempt to convince the army to step in to prevent Banda from taking the Presidency.

“In total, four former ministers have been arrested for questioning in connection with the investigations into the death of the President as revealed in the inquiry report,” said police spokeswoman Rhoda Majolo.

The plot failed, and Banda took power in Malawi as stipulated by the country’s constitution.

President Mutharika died of a heart attack in the town of Lilongwe on April 5th.
