Striking Miners Block Roads and Set Fires in Cuba
A group of striking miners in western Colombia blocked off roads and set fire to truck on Wednesday. The strikers are demanding that their mining activity be legalized.
According to local media over 30 protesters were arrested during scuffles with security forces after riot police were deployed to the area. President Juan Manuel Santos said yesterday that he would not tolerate a single highway being closed due to strikers, and called for talks to end the dispute. Meanwhile demonstrations threatening to spread to other mining areas in Colombia, a resource-rich South American country which is facing growing labour unrest due to poor economic performance.
