Explosion Kills 10 Women in Afghan Graveyard
A suspected bomb attack at an Afghan graveyard on the Muslim holy day of Eid al Fitr has left 10 women dead, plus a further two women and one child injured.
The blast struck during an all-female gathering to commemorate the late wife of a prominent pro-government tribal chief in the Ghani Khel district of Nangarhar. Local police have said that they are unable to confirm the cause of the explosion, but there is a strong suspicion that the blast was the result of a bomb attack by Taliban militants or local criminals.
Meanwhile President Hamid Karzai delivered his annual Eid address, in which he accused the Taliban of being led by foreigners and appealed to Afghan nationalism to end the violence.
“You are working for others, (foreign) guns are put on your shoulders, and innocent Afghan people are being killed by it, homes are destroyed. Give up on it, be Afghan,” he said.
