Former Pope Says “God Told Me” To Resign
Benedict XVI, who shocked the world when he became only the second pope in history to resign from his position, has described how he reached the decision after a mystical experience in which “God told me” to resign, reports the Catholic News Agency Zenit.
The 86 year old former pontiff resigned earlier this year, saying that physical and mental weakness left him unable to fulfil his duties.
According to Zenit Benedict told a recent visitor to his new Vatican home that he had a “mystical experience” during which a divine communication left him with the “absolute desire” to leave his office to be with God in private prayer. He also said that seeing his successor Pope Francis’ charisma had confirmed to him that the resignation was indeed “God’s will.”
Benedict now lives in an old monastery inside the Vatican, where he is regularly visited by the new pope. Pope Francis has described the arrangement as being like having a “live-in grandfather”.
