Origins

Also known by some as the ‘Syrian Uprising’.

The civil war in Syria began as a series of street protests against the goverment of President Bashar al Assad and his Ba’ath party in March 2011. In April of that year the army was deployed to restore order to the streets, and soon opened fire on protesters leading to a substantial umber of deaths. Precise information about the number of deaths is not available. Protests continued, and small groups of armed youth began fighting back against the bloody crackdown. Over time, the street protests gradually evolved into a fully fledged armed rebellion.

From Civil War to International War?

Since its inception the civil war in Syria has threatened to break out of the country’s border to become a broader international war. A toxic combination of sectarian allegiances shared with populations across the middle east, extensive international interests, and the geopolitical importance of Syria to the power structures of the middle east has sparked violence in Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey and threatened to draw in many other nations.

With accusations that Assad’s regime has used chemical weapons, crossing a ‘red line’ set by the international community, we could now be on the brink of the civil war in Syria becoming a wider regional, or world war.
